Dockey Rules and Regulations

ShakeShock.com has decided to eliminate the form for entrants. Now, all submissions can be uploaded directly to the website.

This was done because we received too many complaints that the paperwork for submissions was too lengthy, resulting in boredom, confusion, headaches, papercuts, clogging printers, accidently using the forms as toilet paper, excessive use of the term "henceforth," and the gum disease ginigivitis.

Here are our basic guidelines for entrants.

·         By signing this, you give ShakeShock.com, and all it's employees, representatives, and successors, the permission to display your video.

·         You must be a minimum of 13 years old to submit an entry.

·         If you are under 18, you must have your parent/guardian sign a release form.

·         You cannot submit a video to our competition if you are running for a public political office.

·         You will be disqualified if it turns out you, or any members of your family are associated with our website (it would be seen as favoritism).

·         The Poem you base your video Dockey on must be at least 100 years old.

·         The video Dockey cannot be longer than 5 minutes.

·         You must also submit a video introducing yourself, which must be 30-45 seconds long.  It will be for the website, so don't give out any personal info, just talk about yourself and why you made adapted this poem, and in this style.

·         All videos must be under 100 mb in size.

·         You can submit as many videos as you want.

·         You must upload your video, and list Dockey as one of the keywords.  If you cannot upload your video for technical reasons, then you can mail it in, and we'll upload it for you.  We're nice like that.  :)   But don't push it.  >:(

·         All materials must be received by May 1, 2008.

·         The winner will receive a cash prize of $200.

·         And finally, no nudity, unnecessary violence, or vulgarity.

Dockey Goals & Guidelines

  1. Tell the story of the piece with excitement and/or humor.

  1. The Purpose of ShakeShock.com is to inspire and educate.  We seek to take classic pieces of literature, and adapt them into short video-works to make them more accessible to today’s audience.

  1. Do not show the reader of the poem reading into the camera.

  1. No single shot can remain on screen for more than 7 seconds.

  1. You can have additional dialogue and characters speaking in the piece separate from the poem.  However, you cannot alter the poems actual wording in its English translation.  If you choose to have additional dialogue, make a clear distinction between the poem, and the added dialogue, by using separate voices.

  1. Don’t be afraid to experiment with shots, color, and sound.  Utilize stylistic elements when framing your camera shot, such as:
    1. Gels
    2. Silhouettes
    3. Shadows (blinds)
    4. Mirrors
    5. Sound effects

  1. Writing Guidelines
    1. Learn and understand what the story is about, and then tell it visually through metaphors.
    2. Don’t make fun of the characters, or use derogatory humor.
    3. Try to convey a detailed breakdown on:

                                          i.    Characters

                                        ii.    Plot

                                       iii.    Subtext

iv.    Structure (Chapter by chapter and scene by scene)

    1. Dockey Writing Examples

                                          i.    The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy [Blu-ray]

ii.    Penn & Teller's TV Series

iii.    The Kid Stays in the Picture

iv.    Brainiac Science Show on G4

                                         v.    Blind Date - The Ultimate Collection

  1. Dockeys must have good sound and avoid room tone hum and reverberation.  Sound can often make or break a film, so don’t underestimate it.

  1. Do not use static shots of professors explaining things into camera.

  1. All your paperwork must be signed and in order.

  1. Save all your Tapes, EDL’s, and Editing logs.

  1. All dockeys must be exciting and vibrant.
    1. Examples of documentary format:

                                          i.    Moulin Rouge!

ii.    Loose Change: A Look Into 9/11

iii.    William Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet

                                       iv.    Night Watch

                                         v.    Titus directed by Julie Taymor

  1. Oh, and don’t forget to put the word Dockey in your tags, to let people know you’re competing for the cash prize.

  1. Get your friends to log in and vote for you, since that will affect the judges.

  1. Finally, go to our Terms & Conditions page, fill it out, and mail it in.  You can’t be considered a participant unless you fill it out, and mail it in.
    1. And if you’re under 18, don’t forget to have your parents sign the parental release form.
